Decoding Melasma:

Expert Tips for Tackling Troublesome Pigmentation and Dark Spots

Did you know?

  • Melasma is often triggered by hormonal changes, making it a common concern during pregnancy or while taking hormonal medications.
  • Despite its nickname "mask of pregnancy," melasma can affect anyone, not just pregnant women.
  • Sun exposure can worsen melasma, so wearing sunscreen daily is crucial for prevention and management.
  • Certain medications, such as oral contraceptives or anticonvulsants, can increase the risk of developing melasma.
  • Melasma patches can be symmetrically distributed on the face, appearing on both sides like a mirrored image.
  • UV light isn't the only trigger for melasma; heat and visible light (from electronic devices and indoor lighting) can also contribute to its development.
  • While it can affect both genders, it predominantly troubles women aged 30 and above.
Melasma

At Rejuvaus, we understand the struggles that come with melasma, especially in Australia, where our harsh sun poses additional challenges. Unprotected exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can intensify melasma and darken existing patches.

Melasma distinguishes itself from other forms of pigmentation through its unique characteristics. Unlike freckles or age spots, melasma appears in distinct, patchy patterns, typically on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin.

What causes melasma?

Hormonal changes play a significant role in triggering melasma, which can occur during pregnancy, due to oral contraceptives, or hormonal replacement therapy. If you have a family history of melasma, you may be more prone to developing it. Additionally, factors like stress and exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can worsen the condition.

Underneath the surface, melasma is all about the behaviour of melanocytes—the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives colour to our skin. When hormonal activity increases, these melanocytes become more sensitive and produce excess melanin in certain areas. Even when exposed to the same amount of UV radiation, these areas become darker than the rest of the skin, resulting in the appearance of melasma patches.

Powerhouse Ingredients that help reverse and treat pigmentation

Superox-C (Vitamin C)

Rejuvaus chose a compounded blend SuperOx-CTM for maximum effectiveness and low irritability in combination with other actives. Energises dull-looking skin and suppresses melanin synthesis for a brighter, more even skin tone.

Encapsulated Niacinamide

Barrier-loving Encapsulated slow-release Niacinamide helps fade pigmentation, soothes post-blemish scarring and balances a combination skin without upsetting the microbiome. It also acts as a buffer, strengthening the skin’s protective barrier

BetaWhiteTM

Helps block pigment production in your skin by cleverly binding to receptors on pigment-producing cells and inhibits the DNA proteins that activate these pigment-producing cells.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

AHAs, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, gently exfoliate the skin, promoting cellular turnover and fading pigmentation. They can also improve the overall texture and radiance of the skin.

ChromaBright® Molecule

Our 0.5% Chomabright Molecule is an important part of our anti-pigmentation blend, helping to prevent and fade discolouration without the irritation linked to Hydroquinone.

ALGAKTIV® LightSKN:

Encapsulated green and brown microalgae that targets skin tone, brightening, and reducing age spots. Blue light activated enzymes provide holistic skin protection and dramatically reduce pigmentation.

Vitamin B3
Vitamin C Serum
melasma treatment

Transforming your skin with active cosmeceuticals.

To control melanin production, a well-formulated serum must deliver a synergistic blend of proven melanin inhibitors to block the production of an enzyme called Tyrosinase.

Most brands don’t contain enough high-quality antioxidants and melanin inhibitors due to the production cost of blending high-quality actives and ensuring their stability.

Our i • ActiveTM formulas are specifically designed for melasma, combining the maximum amount of professional-grade ingredients required to be effective & safe.
